Scoliosis Assessment: Overcoming Challenges for Enhanced Care

This June, during Scoliosis Awareness Month, we at ImageBiopsy Lab are excited to highlight the critical issue of scoliosis—a spinal curvature disorder affecting millions worldwide. Scoliosis not only alters physical appearance but also bears a significant emotional burden, particularly during adolescence, a time when self-image and confidence are ever so crucial.

For those battling idiopathic adolescent scoliosis, frequent x-ray scans over several years are necessary to monitor the condition’s progression. The accurate and consistent measurement of Cobb angles, which is considered the gold standard in scoliosis assessment, requires collaboration among orthopedists, radiologists, and other medical professionals. However, challenges such as diurnal variations, which can see Cobb angle measurements vary by up to 5° in a single day, and a total measurement error ranging from 2° to 10° due to variations in radiographic techniques, make reliable assessments difficult.

Innovating with IB Lab SQUIRREL

To tackle these hurdles, we developed IB Lab SQUIRREL, an AI-powered tool trained on over 17,000 images. It boasts an Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) of 0.97 and a mean difference of just 0.16°, underscoring its precision and reliability in measuring Cobb angles. This technology not only sets a new standard in scoliosis assessment but also enhances diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

Our dedication to advancing scoliosis care was recently spotlighted when Christoph Salzlechner, our Clinical Research Manager, received the Innovation Award at ESPR for presenting our study titled 'Fully Automated Measurement of Cobb Angle in Coronal Plane Spine Radiographs.' This study validated the feasibility of IBLab SQUIRREL and highlighted its superior performance compared to traditional methods by radiologists and orthopedic surgeons.

We invite you to join Christoph Götz, COO of ImageBiopsy Lab, for a detailed demonstration of how IB Lab SQUIRREL works—from the initial scan to the final report. Experience firsthand the difference AI support makes in simplifying and speeding up the scoliosis assessment process under time constraints.

Dr. Gruber on the Game-Changing Accuracy of IBLab SQUIRREL

As Doz. Dr. Michael Gruber of Radiologie Baden puts it, "Automated Cobb angle measurements are a game-changer for assessing scoliosis. I'm excited about the support it provides in my reading workflow. IBLab SQUIRREL enhances both diagnostic accuracy and patient care while saving valuable time."
